When you are thinking about the word pregnancy, you usually associate it with a woman carrying a baby to whom she will give birth after 9 months. But what happens if instead of one, she is giving birth to two small and in some cases identical creatures? Some may panic, others may shout out loud in happiness. Anyway, we have to recognize that twins are not that common. Speaking in numbers, it is a fact that about 1 in every 65 pregnancies in the UK today is a twin pregnancy, which means that about 1 in 32 babies born is a twin. In that sense, if you are about to have twins you are a lucky woman and should feel like one.
Nowadays it is possible to find out if you carry twins through ultrasound scan which happens when you are 8-14 weeks pregnant.
There are also some symptoms that make a woman suspect to expect twins. These symptoms are an excessive cramping, an elevated heart rate and a significant morning sickness. Often, women pregnant with twins will begin experiencing symptoms that don't normally appear until later on in a pregnancy. This could be any number of symptoms, such as strong pain, weight gain and other discomforts.
There are 3 facts that make you more likely to have twins:
- You are older than 30
- Twins run in your family
- You have had a fertility treatment
An important distinction in twins is whether they are identical (monozygotic) or non identical (dizygotic).
Identical (monozygotic) twins happen when a single egg (zygote) is fertilised. The egg then divides into two, creating identical twins who share the same genes as one another. Identical twins are always the same sex, so if your twins are identical you'll have two girls or two boys, and they'll look very alike. A good example for identic twins are the Olsen-twins, Mary Kate and Ashley who look absolutely the same.
Non-identical (dizygotic) twins happen when two separate eggs are fertilised and then implant into the woman’s womb. Non-identical twins are more common. The babies may be of the same sex or different sexes. Have you ever heard about that that the brazilian model Gisele Bündchen has a non identical twin called Patricia?
